Urban study Luník IX

Luník IX is a borough of Košice known as the largest marginalized Roma housing estate in Slovakia, long isolated both socially and physically from the rest of the city. The presented proposal brings a new vision of its development, combining architecture, community, and social integration. Instead of traditional solutions, it offers flexible hybrid housing that allows growth according to the needs of residents and engages them in both the planning and construction process. At its core is modular architecture focused on affordability, adaptability, and dignified living.

The project builds on culture as a driver of change, inspired by successful examples from Košice (Tabačka, Kasárne). It includes community workshops, educational pavilions, and creative spaces for children and youth. Economic development is supported through a system of social enterprises (fuel production, building components, recycling) that create job opportunities and build local skills. Emphasis is also placed on reconnecting with the city – new pedestrian and cycling routes, regulated traffic, and links to recreational areas.
