Mixed-Use Complex Poppenbütteler Berg

A new residential district has been developed in the Poppenbüttel district of Hamburg. The newly constructed buildings connect to the existing development toward the southwest. The buildings facing Poppenbütteler Berg feature four full stories and one recessed upper floor, while those facing Kramer-Kray-Weg are lower, with only three stories, and arranged in a more open layout. On a 7.23-hectare site, 21 new buildings have been constructed. Of the total, 19,016 m² are dedicated to housing for 311 households within the framework of municipal rental housing. An additional 746 m² are used as office and community spaces, while 465 m² are planned for retail units. Nearly 327 m² are reserved for a daycare center.

The buildings are designed to create protected inner courtyards between them. There are four building typologies, offering a mix of 1- to 4-room apartments. Some buildings are freestanding (tower-like), while others are arranged in row or L-shaped layouts, with 3 to 5 apartments per floor. Offices, shops, and the daycare center are located on the ground floors of selected buildings. The structural system consists of a reinforced concrete frame with a ventilated brick façade. The apartment layouts are oriented according to the path of the sun, with living areas featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and safety railings.
