Principles and Standards of Benches
Benches are one of the most important place-making elements in every city. Public space belongs to everyone, and benches transform it into a living room for the public, offering opportunities for rest, spending time with loved ones, and fostering a stronger relationship with the city. In addition to their residential function, benches should also provide multifunctional potential – for example, as physical elements that moderate movement, or as features that create conditions for various activities in public space.
The current state of urban furniture is marked by temporary solutions, insufficient maintenance, and unsystematic interventions in public space, which often result in inadequate or entirely missing opportunities for sitting, resting, and spending time. This document proposes that the installation of urban furniture should prioritize strategic placement, functionality, durability of design, inclusive access, and the cultivation of public space.
An integral part of the principles and standards was a comprehensive methodology of research, testing, and piloting of products in public space. Testing was carried out through sampling and controlled-condition trials, which enabled detailed monitoring of the effectiveness and functionality of the proposed solutions. Piloting, on the other hand, involved applying the knowledge gained to specific revitalization projects, particularly in Bratislava’s urban streets, where improvements to public spaces were implemented with the aim of enhancing their quality and accessibility for residents (see Projects →).
